Bio:
Prior to serving as governor for 8 years, Jim Blanchard represented Oakland and Macomb counties in the US Congress for 8 years. He distinguished himself as a leader in restoring America's economic competitiveness and as a fighter for Michigan. In Congress he oversaw financial, monetary, trade and energy issues. Jim authored the Chrysler Loan Guarantee Act of 1980 helping to save thousands of jobs in Michigan and around America. He also served on the House Banking, Finance and Urban Affairs Committee and the Science and Technology Committee. During his eight years in Washington, then Congressman Blanchard closely monitored federal programs affecting the quality and preservation of the Great Lakes, introducing the Great Lakes Protection Act in 1982. He served as Democratic Whip of the Michigan delegation and was one of 10 members of Congress appointed to the President's Commission on the Holocaust. He served as Assistant Attorney General of Michigan from 1969 to 1974.

Most recently, Jim Blanchard served as United States Ambassador to Canada from 1993 to 1996. In recognition of his outstanding performance, he was presented the "Foreign Affairs Award for Public Service" by Secretary of State Warren Christopher - making him one of only a handful of ambassadors to receive this prestigious award. During his tenure as Ambassador, he managed a broad range of trade, natural resources, environmental and national security issues, and spearheaded the new Open Skies Agreement between the US and Canada. He holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. from Michigan State University, and a law degree (JD) from the University of Minnesota. Born in Detroit on August 8, 1942, James Blanchard grew up in Ferndale. He is married to Janet Blanchard, a native of Williamston, former career civil servant for the State of Michigan and White House Associate Director of Personnel. He has one son, Jay, now a graduate student at MSU. The Blanchards reside in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
