Bio:
Bonior was elected to Congress in 1976 and soon became known as a champion of the rights of Vietnam veterans. He founded the Vietnam-era Veterans in Congress and helped guide legislation that specifically addressed the needs of Vietnam Vets including education, job training and health care. He chronicled the veterans' difficult return home and the struggle for recognition by co-authoring a 1984 book entitled The Vietnam Veteran: A History of Neglect.

Congressman David Bonior was elected Democratic Whip in 1991, the second in command in the House Democratic Leadership. He gained widespread respect for his courage in taking on Newt Gingrich and the new Speaker's extreme agenda of cutting Medicare, education and even the school lunch program, successfully leading the effort to stop the so-called Gingrich revolution. Bonior was also instrumental in the enactment of the Family Medical Leave Act, which allowed more working parents to take time off to be with their families.

Bonior has a 100-percent rating from the NAACP. The AFL-CIO, AFSCME, the UAW, the American Federation of Teachers, the Michigan Education Association and the Teamsters have all given him a 100 percent rating. He has a 93 percent rating from the Children's Defense Fund and a 100 percent rating from Network, the Catholic social justice lobby.

Congressman Bonior has served on the Board of Trustees of Gallaudet University, the national school for the deaf, since 1979. Gallaudet University awarded Congressman Bonior an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws in 1984. David Bonior received his Masters degree in history from Chapman University in 1972. He is author of a forthcoming book, Walking to Mackinac, to be published by the University of Michigan Press. The book chronicles David and Judy Bonior's experiences while walking the length of the state of Michigan in the summer of 1997.
