Bio:
Gary Peters was born and raised in Oakland County, Michigan. His
father was a public school teacher and his mother was a union steward working in a local nursing home. He is married to Colleen Ochoa and is
the father of three children, Gary, Jr. (15), Madeleine (5) and Alana (3).
Peters was elected to the State Senate in 1994. He quickly rose as a
leader in the State Senate. In addition to being Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus, he serves as Vice Chair on several key committees that deal with the broad range of issues challenging our
communities. He is the ranking Democrat on more policy committees than any other member of the Senate.
He currently serves as Vice Chair of the following committees:
- Finance Committee
- Education Committee
- Judiciary Committee and Natural Resources Committee.
He is also a member of the following legislative committees and commissions:
- Economic Development and Regulatory Affairs Committee
- Michigan Law Revision Commission
- Michigan Sentencing Commission
- Michigan Electronic Record Tracking System Advisory Board and
- Founder and Co-Chair of the Legislative Arts Caucus.
Prior to running for State Senator, Gary Peters served on the Rochester Hills City Council where he chaired the Solid Waste Management
Committee, served as Vice Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee and was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He was also a member of the Paint Creek Trailways Commission and the
Environmental Policy Committee of the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).
Senator Peters is a financial advisor and has managed branches for two
major Wall Street firms. He was one of the youngest branch managers ever appointed at Merrill Lynch. As a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch,
he qualified for the Chairman's Club - the firm's highest recognition club at the time.
Gary Peters serves as a Securities Arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers. He has
taught Strategic Management and Business Policy at Oakland University in Rochester and was an instructor in the Finance and Business Economics Department at Wayne State University.
He also served as a Lieutenant and a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist in the United States Naval Reserve. His reserve duty included
time in the Persian Gulf supporting Operation Southern Watch. During his service he received numerous awards and citations. These include:
